I have a skeleton necklace that I often wear during the winter with a couple tunic/leggings outfits. Since dainty necklaces seemed to be in this summer, I thought it would be fun to use some little skeleton key charms into a necklace.
A couple years ago, I had bought a lot of skeleton keys off of ebay. I was looking for large keys that could be turned into Santa Keys for that winter’s craft fairs. I obviously misread the listing, because while some of the keys were nice and large, there were quite a few that were under an inch long. I’ve been looking for something to do with these keys and determined that a dainty skeleton necklace was the perfect solution!
First, I looked through my bag of mini skeleton keys and decided which ones would make good necklaces. I really wanted ones that would look good no matter which side showed (although I still picked out the cool diamond shaped one too).
Next, I wanted them to be a little different, so I pulled out the hot pink spray paint (because everything is better in pink). Simply give a light coat of spray paint, let it dry, then flip them over and repeat. I had to give two light coats on each side in order to cover up all the metal. If you want a more antique look, simply leave a little bit of metal showing, or sand a little bit away on the high spots.
I had some silver necklace chains in my craft supplies so simply thread the charm onto the chain and you have the perfect skeleton key necklace for summer (or even year round).
I love how this necklace turned out, it will be perfect to wear with a simple t-shirt. Since they are so easy to make, these necklaces would also be great for party favors or group gifts. This is also a super simple kid craft too!
Which charm is your favorite?
