This post is in partnership with Stanley. All stories and opinions are my own.
Deer season was always a HUGE part of my life growing up. My dad’s family made plans every year for what we called Deer Camp. The hunters in our family would gather together on opening day and basically hunt for 2 weeks. I was always in school and could only attend Deer Camp on the weekends but it was something I looked forward to every single year. We’d meet up at my Great Aunt’s house out in the country. It wasn’t really her full-time house, just basically a house that was used for Deer Camp. I’m pretty sure some of my family members grew up in the house (ie my grandfather and his siblings) but those memories are a bit foggy. Anyways, I digress. The house had 3 bedrooms and 1 bathroom. In each bedroom were a couple of beds. The room I usually slept in had 3 full size beds squeezed in. Somehow we managed to squeeze in a ton of family members each weekend (the ones who stuck around during the week to hunt had it so easy!!) but no one ever complained.
The food was always home-cooked and amazing. Veggies from the garden, meat that was farm-raised by my family (or freshly hunted) or fresh fish caught that day. At night-time, the card tables were pulled out and there would be multiple games of cards being played. I remember learning how to sew by hand, cross-stitch and embroider during those trips to Deer Camp. I have a ton of memories from Deer Camp. And am truly saddened that it is no longer. As my family grew older and my grandfather’s siblings passed away, my cousins began divvying up the land and the Deer Camp house was eventually sold. (boo!)
But that doesn’t take away from what I remember. And here are my 10 tips for a perfect hunting trip:
TEN: Lots and lots of warm clothing (a MUST when it’s super cold outside).
NINE: Hunting gear of choice.
EIGHT: Ice filled cooler.
SEVEN: Blankets.
SIX: Stanley Hand Vacuum Mug (aka Thermos) (coffee or hot chocolate to keep yourself warm!)
FIVE: Lots of drinks (coffee/hot chocolate/adult beverages) & snacks!!
FOUR: Deck of cards
THREE: Grill (if there isn’t one where you are going)
TWO: Food (home-cooked is the best!)
ONE: Your best hunting buddies (and families if there’s room!)
These 10 things were at every single one of our deer camps. I hope your next hunting trip is memorable and fun! What would you add to the list??
